The gym isn't as scary as you think

The gym gets a bad reputation and its easy to fall prey to it, I'll be honest, I have fallen for it too!

When I first started going to a bigger gym I was far to intimidated to get my moneys worth! 9/10 workouts I would go in, get on a treadmill and hide from anyone else. Feeling so uncomfortable in that environment.

To be honest there are only a few reasons why you could be feeling like this. Lets break them down and troubleshoot them!

Lack of knowledge

This one is super easy! It is completely unfair to expect you to know everything about exercise as soon as you sign the membership forms. You are just released to a jungle of machines and equipment without much explanation or too much information all at once. So, like any reasonable human you stick to what you know and what comes easiest. This wasn't the plan when you decided to take the plunge so you follow all the fitness influencers you can find and get overwhelmed by even more conflicting information than before and no helpful way of actually implementing them!

How can you fix this?

Getting a structured program will help you increase your knowledge at a sensible pace. Using programs like my Lift with Confidence program you are able to tip toe off the treadmill and find the fun of the rest of the gym. These programs take away the guess work and give you a safe structure to grow, becoming the fitness chick that you've been wanting to be!

Lack of support

Support is so important when on your on your fitness journey. It will catch you on those days where motivation has gone and help you move forward to way past the point you thought possible.

If you are anything like me then walking up to a random person on the gym floor to ask for help is literally a nightmare. It brings me out in cold sweats! I don't care if it is literally their job I cannot ask for help.

How can you fix this?

Finding a personal trainer online or in person that you vibe with is the perfect way to push yourself forward and feel less lonely in your fitness journey. But it has to be someone who you get on with well, feel motivated by and don't want to cancel on. Someone like me maybe :P . We are there to cheer you on and hype you up when you need it, supplying you with the tool kit you need to overcome hurdles along the way and make getting to the gym simple.

Lack of self belief

This one hits deep. If you don't think you are good at working out or feel that you don't look like you belong in the gym is going to really affect how you put yourself into your workout. If you are already feeling naff about yourself you are not going to feel the benefits of your workouts or feel any sort of motivation in the first place.

It can then become a game of finding and holding onto all the reasons as to why the gym makes you feel like poop rather than debunking them to get to the route of the problem.

How can you fix this?

By working on your self belief. This can take a really long time to do but you can make it faster by working with someone who understands your concerns and fears. When going through these limitations with clients I find its so important to break it down so my clients can see the areas their building strength in, they can see the wins they get at the gym, this means they can see their self belief improving. By checking in with a trainer and working together you will answer the deep questions that will unlock the feelings and fears that hold you back.

Not being in the right gym environment

Finally, you are just not in the right fitness space for you! I could write you a long list of things I hate about certain gyms that make them not right for me, my yuck could be someone else's yum!

When making my PT studio I wanted it to be an Anti-Gym its pink and cute so my clients who feel more anxious about general gyms are put at ease because I can guarantee that the majority of them had already tried a generic gym and found the whole thing off putting.

Public gyms are not one size fits all but sometimes we treat them as such. We look at the price tag rather than what we need or want from a gym and we may not be able to put words to what we want either, it may just be a feeling!

How can you fix this?

If this is something that you feel affects you the best thing to do is to try as many gyms as possible before signing a contract! You will get a good feel for the space and other clients by doing this, enabling you to make an informed decision as to where you are going to spend your time. If big gyms are still to big then research local PT studios like mine just outside of Basingstoke. These are perfect for nurturing you into a fitness mindset within your comfort zone.
