Beginner nerves are a nightmare! Like you have been a newbie at so many moments in your life but you still get nervous each time. And for some reason, fitness beginner nerves are the worst! You imagine walking into the gym in the workout clothes that you bought in January 3 years ago when you told yourself you were going to become a gym bunny and looking like a complete outsider.
You imagine a room full of people who know what they're doing judging you for not understanding a machine or getting an exercise wrong.
And god forbid they should see just how red and sweaty you get! Yet these nerves are keeping you from getting the chance to truly get to know yourself and see just how capable you really are.
You see, I can pretty much guarantee that everyone in the gym has felt nervous, unfit, self conscience and out of place at some point in their fitness journeys.
No one wakes up super confident, muscly and able to run 5k in 20 mins. It just doesn't work like that. At some point, the people you're imagining in the gym were beginners! They too would have felt out of place and insecure, but the difference is? They faced it and kept showing up until they got the confidence. They probably didn't even notice when they crossed over to the other side and became the gym bunnies! So many of my clients have watched and waited until they were ready to overcome their fears and begin their fitness journey and then a couple of months down the line feel so at home in the gym and their confidence flows into other fitness spaces too!
The irony is you wont see why you made a big deal about it a couple of months down the line!
So how do you overcome this fear? Start small:
Joining a smaller gym like The Barbelle Club will allow you to get your barings. Often clients join my gym to learn how to execute exercises and use gym equipment so they are able to go into mainstream gyms.
Have a plus one:
Joining a gym where you know you have friends already there will help reduce the worries, they can keep you motivated and distracted while you find your way around then after a while you'll be happy to go by yourself.
Giving yourself the tough love:
Sometimes you've just got to give yourself a stern talking to, remind yourself that what you want is worth overcoming the nerves and get comitted. That means more than just going once and putting yourself off again! Give yourself a month of 2 or 3 workouts a week and see how you feel then!
Get a plan:
Clients who go into gyms with the programs that I design for them are able to get their heads down and get a workout done that is perfect for their knowledge and fitness level. This builds the confidence the fastest as you are able to really quickly see the increase in fitness and strength rather than floating around not knowing what to do.
Joining the Strength in Self-Love membership will create the confidence and the fitness that you desire from either the classes at The Barbelle Club or through your own personal gym program. Working together we can get you over your beginner nerves and into the habits that will create long term fitness.
